I've Been Thinking

This Sunday we welcome the 14th Christchurch Girls Brigade Company to join us online in lieu of the scheduled church parade. Avonhead Baptist has hosted this Girls Brigade Company since 1991, and I was a Senior in the Company when it shifted from Upper Riccarton Methodist Church to ABC! I now have the privilege of being the Captain of the Company and watching my three daughters have so much fun. We meet on a Monday night during term time from 6-7.30pm (7pm finish for years 1-4).

One of the things I love about Girls Brigade is that you don’t become too old to go! You can start at any age from 5 years old, we’ve recently had a new enrollment from a year 10 teenager. At our last area parade we acknowledged a life member from another company in her 90’s who still has some involvement. One of our current leaders came from Brigade in Malaysia, and re-joined in New Zealand not long after she arrived. We are part of an international network that seeks to empower girls and women around the globe both in their Christian faith and also in life.

Girls Brigade is based on the verse in Luke 2:52, “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and with man.” So we aim to educate girls, promote physical activity, encourage spiritual growth and build up social interactions. It's a great way to make new friends too. Can I encourage you if you know a girl or young woman who may be interested, invite them along. It’s one of the ways we are discipling the nations across the ages.
